When Kanye West Deemed Lil Wayne the World’s No. 1 Rapper in 2013
In 2009, Kanye West turned public enemy No. 1 by stealing the spotlight from Taylor Swift. For his fans, who thought that the incident was off, the coming years unfortunately unveiled many more shenanigans from the ‘Graduation’ rapper. And a repeat of the 2009 incident came 4 years later as well. When MTV announced its ranking for the Hottest MCs in the Game in 2013, Ye practically pulled another award-shaming moment.
In his opinion, MTV’s rankings were as faulty as their decision to award Taylor Swift over Beyoncé. Instead, he felt that Lil Wayne should have won the top spot in place of a Compton legend.

In the list, West failed to get a place in the top 3 or even top 5. He was not happy about his 7th position and relayed this to DJ Enuff on The Angie Martinez Show in 2013. But he took even more offense to the fact that Lil Wayne, who along with Jay-Z and Eminem, is the “greatest rapper of all time” was not even included. Instead, it was the ‘Humble’ rapper from Compton, Kendrick Lamar, who stood first.
The fact that his frenemy, Drake who he believes to be inferior to him, took 5th place did not help. On top of all that, he felt that Big Sean, whose part in West’s ‘Mercy’ made it a classic, should have been in the top 5 as well.
Thankfully, the rapper did not have a stage to get on and shun MTV because that speech would have lasted hours. After all, he had a lot more to say about the music industry mogul and why they gave him number 7.

According to Ye, the people behind the Hottest MCs List held certain prejudices towards him. For him, the makers of the list “don’t like” his new version that preferred high fashion over “pink polos” or the fact that he was “in a relationship” with Kim Kardashian. In his mind, he was now “Givenchy Kanye” having surpassed his “Tribe Called Quest era” which irked MTV.
Today, a decade after these statements, the said relationship may have fizzled out, but the ‘Donda’ rapper still continues to ruffle feathers. Meanwhile, Kanye West’s fervor towards defending himself, his friends, and his family, is as crazed as ever.
