Kanye West may have officially made his comeback to the music industry. But the Louis Vuitton Don is also plotting his reentrance into fashion. It was not just Adidas that broke its partnership with Kanye West in the year 2022. In the same year, Ye also lost his collaboration with the American clothing and accessory retailer Gap, where the ‘Donda’ rapper had even worked as a teen. Despite the huge sales, the partnership could not last for too long and faced a termination just two years after printing millions of dollars.

Here is a breakdown of the timeline of Yeezy Gap and everything one needs to know about this billion-dollar fashion collaboration.

Kanye West announced his partnership with Gap in the year 2020 with the hope of becoming “the Steve Jobs of the Gap”. Gap saw a 35% hike in their sales as soon as the news broke. As per Forbes, the brand made a sale of $1 billion in the first year itself. It soon got a high-end deal with luxury fashion house Balenciaga. However, just weeks after announcing the in-store retail experiences for their Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga collection in 2022, the brand officially confirmed the termination of their partnership.

Kanye West was very vocal about his issues with Gap and accused the retailer of failing to meet Yeezy’s obligations. Despite the fallout, Gap continued to offload its already-produced stock. However, following Ye’s antisemitic statements and the flood of controversy that followed the rapper, Gap slammed the brakes on selling any remaining Yeezy Gap inventory. No one thought that Yeezy and Gap would ever come together to revolutionize basic fashion with their trademark minimalist aesthetics and utilitarian ethos.

Kanye West had a controversial history with the brand Gap. Therefore, when the Donda Times, one of Ye’s most trusted fan accounts on X, formerly Twitter, announced this new collection, it caught everyone off guard. The page announced that “Ye is now selling YZY GAP items for $20” on his official Yeezy website. This followed Ye’s recent effort to make his fashion more affordable. Last year, while the rapper was causing quite a stir in Italy, news of his meetings with sustainable clothing brands leaked out as well.

From meeting the creative head of Marni to attending Mowalola’s Fashion Week in London, all signs were pointing towards a fashion resurgence from Kanye West. Recently, Page Six also reported that the rapper, along with his designer wife, Bianca Censori, is looking forward to launching a fashion brand. Whether the sudden release of the Yeezy Gap collection is an effort to clear the remaining stock from two years ago is uncertain. However, it is clear that West is gearing up to make a major fashion comeback in 2024.
