Recently, Ed Sheeran took to his Instagram to share a video of him and his close friend, Courteney Cox. It was to share a new song that he had written, but the surprising part was what inspired it. In the video, he can be heard telling Cox that he “wrote this song inspired by Friends” and then began playing it for her. He also revealed that the song was called ‘American Town’ and the album ‘Autumn Variations’ has a rather surprising connection to his other bestie, Taylor Swift.
After a bit of strumming on his guitar, Ed Sheeran began singing, “We ate Chinese food in small white boxes, live the life we saw in Friends. Your room it barely fits the mattress. Wake up, leave for work again. The wind it seems to blow right through us. Down jackets are the trend.” After he had finished his little kitchen jam session, Courteney Cox ended the video by asking, “Do I get paid?”
Though it may be surprising, the news of a song being inspired by Friends comes 2 years after Ed Sheeran revealed that Cox had already been on one of his previous albums.

Back at the 2021 MTV VMAs, Ed Sheeran casually decided to reveal that Courteney Cox’s voice was featured on the artist’s =’ album. Even though he himself was not too sure which song she was on, he said that she was definitely there on ‘Visiting Hours’ doing the backup vocals. While most people were a little taken aback by this sudden surprising duo, the ‘Shape of You’ singer managed to shut everything down with one simple explanation.
He went on to explain that his producer, Johnny McDaid, was dating the star and that had given the three of them ample time together and they figured out that Cox had a set of lungs on her. And the rest is history. As for his upcoming album, it is set to be released on September 29, and from what the singer has revealed so far; it looks like fans might need to keep the tissues ready.
