The MTV VMAs were buzzing as Tyla snagged an award in the Best Afro-beats category for her viral hit, ‘Water’, serving a major win for her in just the second year of the category. Going up against heavyweights like Usher and Burna Boy, it was a huge moment for her. But here is where the plot thickens: despite a solid three nominations and being a first-time MTV contender, she missed out on the Best New Artist award, which everyone was rooting for her to win after her BET Awards success.

The crown for Best New Artist went to the rising star Chappell Roan, leaving Tyla’s potential history-making moment as one of the night’s biggest snubs. However, she was not alone to face a loss this evening.

Taylor Swift pleases the Song of the Summer chart instead of Sabrina Carpenter

Sabrina Carpenter may have hit the big leagues, outshining Travis Scott this year, but she fell just shy of snagging the Song of the Summer trophy. Instead, it was her celebrity childhood crush, Taylor Swift, who took the win home. Even though Swift was already leading the nomination charge with the most nods, everyone was rooting for Carpenter’s ‘Please Please Please.’

The track not only marked a fresh new era for her, but also dominated social media trends and playlists all summer long. However, Swift’s collaboration with Post Malone, ‘Fortnight,’ had the final laugh, leaving Carpenter’s summer anthem a tad envious of the spotlight.

Finally, the biggest of the biggest snub that had many with a bitter aftertaste was Hozier.

Once thought to be a one-hit wonder, Hozier’s MTV VMA nomination this year was like a comeback tour for his fans. Hozier scored a nod for Best Alternative with his track ‘Too Sweet,’ right after his ‘Unheard’ EP made waves as his first No.1 single on the Hot 100. Even though he was previously nominated for ‘Take Me To Church,’ this time around, the trophy slipped through his fingers again—this year going to Benson Boone for 'Beautiful Things.'

It was a classic case of déjà vu, leaving many fans feeling like the celebration was missing a beat. So while the MTV VMAs had their high notes, they also hit a few sour chords that still have people stumbling over the festivities.
