The Weeknd Steps Up for Lana Del Rey, Slamming Her Snub From a Coveted Billboard List
This year, we have seen artists beefing, diss tracks flying from all corners, high-profile romances, and rising music sensations. And now, it is time to highlight one of the most heartwarming friendships the music industry has seen so far- The Weeknd and Lana Del Rey. The Weeknd and Del Rey are more than just collaborators. And it is often overlooked how supportive the rapper can be of Del Rey, something that becomes pretty clear from how he always talks highly about the pop star. And he may have just done it again.

Billboard recently dropped its Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century list, and it featured names like Katy Perry in the last spot, The Weeknd himself, Ye (aka Kanye West), and many more. The latest spot that was revealed was the third one, which went to none other than Rihanna. However, Lana Del Rey was nowhere to be found on the list, despite being one of the iconic pop stars of the era. The Weeknd, despite getting featured on the list, took to X to comment on Del Rey's snub, asking, “where is Lana on that billboard’s greatest pop star list?”.
The top two spots are yet to be revealed, and while it is a safe bet that one of them will go to Taylor Swift, the question is whether the newly married songstress will take the other. The Weeknd has collaborated with the ‘Summertime Sadness’ singer on several tracks and even had her contribute background vocals to one of his songs. But Rey is more than just a collaborator to him, as he made clear years ago.
Almost a decade ago, The Weeknd explained why Lana Del Rey is so important to his music.

At first, one might think The Weeknd and Del Rey are total opposites in the music world. But they have a lot more in common than their music genres might let on. In a 2015 interview with Pitchfork, The Weeknd talked about the way their music connects. “I feel like we’ve always been talking to each other through our music”, the 'Popular' artist said, adding that Rey has been a big source of inspiration for him.

The Weeknd also believes their music is spiritually linked. “It’s just this ghostly collaboration that feels the most natural," the 34-year-old added. Maybe that explains why their collaborations always feel so right and why The Weeknd’s support for Del Rey runs so deep.
