Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Gives "era" a Whole New Meaning in the Collins Dictionary
If a biopic was ever to be made about Taylor Swift’s glorious career in the music industry, the Eras Tour would surely need its own special. The musical tour, showcasing the pop star’s different phases or ‘eras’ as an artist- reflecting different circumstances in her life- not only broke multiple records as the highest-grossing tour ever but also ticked all the boxes for capitalism and brought in a financial boom everywhere it stopped around the world. And now, it is rewriting history once more, thanks to Collins Dictionary.
Taylor Swift has changed what “era” means with her tour, and Collins Dictionary has introduced a brand-new meaning for the word.

Taylor Swift has adeptly propelled the term "era" into the forefront of pop culture. Some people might say the Eras Tour is just a big celebration of all the pop star has done throughout her career. But the true meaning of “eras” is about taking a moment to appreciate where one is in their life and where they are headed next. And Collins Dictionary has finally caught on to that meaning. According to a newly updated definition, “era” will now also mean "a period of one's life or career that is of a distinctive character".
The rise of the word “eras” is a great reminder that one can shape their eras in their own way. Over the years, Taylor Swift and her massive fandom have come up with a bunch of new terms. For instance, "Swiftmas" refers to her annual tradition of sending holiday gifts to her fans, "Swiftonomics" looks at the economic impact, and "Swiftquakes" are the seismic activities that occur at her concerts.
None of these words, however, could win a Word of the Year award- except for the term “eras”.

Dictionary.com recognized the word "eras" last year, right at the height of the Eras Tour’s success. The website named it the official 'Vibe' Word of The Year. Giving credit to Swift for popularizing the term with her groundbreaking Eras Tour, Dictionary.com pointed out that the word inspired “people to empower themselves to define- and redefine- their own personal eras.”
Since launching the career-spanning Eras Tour in March, Swift has shattered numerous records, and her ongoing tour is projected to earn over $2 billion by the end of this year. But before the tour concludes next month, it is clear that both the songstress and her fans have created a moment in pop culture that will stick around for a long time.
