Singapore has defended the economic benefits derived from Swift’s concerts, asserting that they outweigh the incentives offered to secure the singer’s Southeast Asia-exclusive performance. Amid speculation about the payment, Edwin Tong, the Minister for Culture, Community, and Youth, emphasized that the actual grant size is not as high as rumored. While there was reluctance to disclose specifics because of business confidentiality, the minister stated that Singapore’s gains, including increased tourism and spending, surpass the grant’s magnitude.
Speculation arose after Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin mentioned subsidies of up to $3 million per concert from Singapore to prevent Swift from performing elsewhere in the region during her Eras tour. Singapore refuted the exact figures despite criticism from other Southeast Asia nations. It defended its concert tie-ups, highlighting the significant economic advantages and asserting the need to be competitive and efficient in such deals.
