For years, there has always been a divide between the world of academia and pop culture. However, Taylor Swift managed to change that with her musical domination. With stars like the artist coming around only once in a lifetime, some Ivy League schools thought it smart to include her in their syllabus. After a string of other universities added a course about the star to their list, Harvard ended up following suit.

After many debates and months of waiting, a date for the Taylor Swift and Her World course finally made its way online. It came just hours before the class began.

The world has been waiting in anticipation for months over what could happen to the over-enrolled Taylor Swift Course at Harvard. Thankfully, a detail about its first day was revealed online. In a post to wbur.org by Professor Stephanie Burt, it was revealed that her class would kick off its first session on Sunday afternoon. While she admitted to having “wicked stage fright,” she stood by her earlier argument as to how the course would benefit the students.

She continued that the class “won’t just listen to Taylor: We’ll hear other, less famous songwriters. We will read Willa Cather’s novels, James Weldon Johnson’s Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, and the poetry of Alexander Pope.” With the professor having so much passion for her subject, there is no doubt that the deep dive into the singer and her subtle nuances will leave students in awe.

While its announcement came as a surprise, it left fans of the 34-year-old rushing to enroll in it. With a huge number of students showing interest in taking up the course, the university had to call for additional teaching assistants to help them out.

While it looks like their problems were solved, Professor Stephanie Burt also acknowledged the number of students in her class, calling it the “largest class” she had “ever taught.” With more and more Swifties wanting to learn more about the 2023 Time’s Person of the Year, there is no doubt that the next batch might also see an increase in number.
