The 2024 award season has already seen Selena Gomez gracing multiple red carpets. She attended both the Golden Globes and the Emmys back in January alone. However, unfortunately, the streak did not last, and Gomez was MIA from major events like the Met Gala and even the Grammys. Now, she has also given the 2024 VMAs a miss- most likely because she was not on the nominations list. 

Gomez did make an appearance at the 2023 VMAs, where she won Best Afrobeats Video for her collaboration with Rema on 'Calm Down'. But even the year before, at the 2022 VMAs, she chose to sit it out since there were no nominations. Gomez has had quite a busy year as an actress and entrepreneur. The 32-year-old just dropped the first few episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4- the filming of which had her skipping out on many of the popular events earlier this year.

Gomez also celebrated her fourth anniversary of launching her Rare Beauty empire and was dubbed a literal billionaire by Bloomberg. On top of that, she is now eyeing an Oscar for her new movie Emilia Pérez. Given her packed schedule, the singer usually skips the VMAs if she is not performing and does not have any awards to chase. However, there was one year when, despite having multiple nominations, she gave the VMAs a miss.

Along with Gomez, her then-boyfriend, who was not only nominated for multiple awards but was also slated to perform, gave the VMAs a pass.

Selena Gomez skipped the 2017 VMAs despite being nominated twice-  once for Best Dance Song for ‘It Ain’t Me’ and once for Best Collaboration for her and Charlie Puth’s ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’.  At that time, she was busy filming the Woody Allen movie with Elle Fanning and Timothée Chalamet, titled, A Rainy Day in New York. There were plenty of stories from the stars and Gomez’s manager confirming she was in New York City, not Los Angeles where the VMAs were held.

Since Gomez was not planning to attend, it was rumored that The Weeknd, who was set to perform at the VMAs and was also nominated for four awards, did not want to be at the event without his girlfriend. So, despite being up for Artist of the Year, he chose to skip it. Now that it has been a while since Gomez and The Weeknd parted ways, the Rare Beauty mogul could be watching the VMAs from the comfort of her own home with her producer boyfriend, Benny Blanco.
