One cannot take Taylor Swift and her fandom lightly. After all, the majority of US adults and teens, around 53% of them call themselves fans of the singer, with 43% identifying themselves as Swifties as per Morning Consult’s 2023 survey. All in all, the ‘Bad Blood’ singer’s fandom is a true metaverse. Any hate comment against her goes through her fans, misogynistic remarks, or otherwise. So Olivia Wilde ignited quite a firestorm when she shared a tweet to her Instagram story that read, “I wish Taylor Swift was in love with a climate scientist.“

It is no surprise that the budding romance between the ‘Lover’ singer and NFL star Kelce has been under the spotlight. Whether it was a cameo on SNL featuring Kelce and Swift or Swift’s noteworthy presence at Kelce’s football matches, it was all about her. But Wilde’s indirect jab stirred up some controversy. She eventually found herself in hot waters and had to do some damage control. In her defense, Wilde wrote, “I meant no harm. It’s obviously a comment on how much attention gets paid to stupid things.” 

Wilde’s statement, despite her best efforts, had little impact on the Swifties. Swift’s immense influence on the masses is unmistakable. She cheers on Kelce, jersey sales skyrocket by 400%, and people turn out for the presidential campaign if she asks them to. She also took over much of the NFL coverage following her first appearance at a football match. Such is the influence.

With Swift’s immense stardom and dedicated fanbase, the Swifties found themselves in a whirlwind. Moreover, they were unable to resist lashing out at Wilde for her comments about Swift and her relationship.

Taylor Swift fans unleash their fury

Wilde’s comment did not sit well with fans, and they let her have it. They dished out suggestions like it was hotcakes on a Sunday morning. One fan advised her to roll up her sleeves and plant some trees. Another fan, with a dash of sarcasm, recommended that she give jealousy a rest and stop stirring the pot of her own discontent.

A passionate Swiftie took the blunt route and tweeted that no one requested this. It was like a protective shield had formed around their beloved singer.

One fan took a jab at Wilde, likening her statement to one made by Jada Pinkett Smith, suggesting that both of them were equally adept at bothering people and achieving a certain level of irrelevance. The reference to Smith brought back memories of her recent comment about Tupac Shakur, which had her facing a fierce onslaught of fan backlash.

One fan did not let up even after Wilde’s clarification. They retorted that intentions aside, her comments spoke louder than her words, leaving a lingering impression of criticism, whether intended or not.

One fan simply pointed out the glaring truth: Taylor Swift shines brightly because of her well-earned success.

Despite Wilde’s attempt to clarify her intentions, it seemed that the Swifties remained unswayed and unconvinced.
