Ten years ago, Hozier’s ‘Take Me To Church’ was ubiquitous, from radio airplay to late-night shows, even landing a spot in a Beats commercial featuring LeBron James. The down-tempo rock track by the Irishman later became a favorite for social media reels and shares. Despite this, Hozier seemed to struggle to reach the top of the charts, never quite making it to the Hot 100’s summit. However, with the release of ‘Too Sweet,’ he has redefined his career.

Once thought to be a one-hit wonder, Hozier’s recent MTV VMA 2024 nomination suggests a potential redemption year, raising the possibility of his first MTV VMA win.

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards have announced their nominees, and one name generating significant buzz is Hozier, who is up for Best Alternative Song with his hit track ‘Too Sweet.’ This nomination comes on the heels of his ‘Unheard’ EP, which has achieved a career milestone as his first No. 1 single on the Hot 100. Despite the widespread success of 'Take Me To Church' a decade ago, it only reached No. 2.

Other nominees in the Best Alternative Song category include Benson Boone for ‘Beautiful Things,’ Bleachers for ‘Tiny Moves,’ Imagine Dragons for ‘Eyes Closed,’ Linkin Park for ‘Friendly Fire,’ and Teddy Swims for ‘Lose Control (Live).’ As Hozier celebrates the significant achievement of ‘Too Sweet,’ the question remains whether it will secure the win and call for Hozier’s renaissance and redemption all at once.

Hozier received his first MTV VMA nomination for ‘Take Me To Church’ but unfortunately, did not win. With ‘Too Sweet,’ however, he has a chance to rewrite history. Not only did it achieve No. 1 in the US but also topped the charts in Ireland, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, marking his first No. 1 hit in the UK.

Hozier additionally became the first Irish artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 since Sinead O'Connor’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ in 1990, and he joins O'Connor, Gilbert Sullivan, and U2 as the fourth artist overall to achieve this. With ‘Too Sweet’ earning 2x Platinum status across three countries, it goes without saying that all eyes are on Hozier. Especially with a chart performance so impressive, now it remains to be seen if he can capitalize on this momentum.
