2024 was a year of musical greatness but also of a greater divide. Despite the audacious artistic comebacks that made the year an all-out festive season, it was the back-and-forth industrial disputes that had every eye on the stars. Speaking of creative conflicts, a celebrity squabble that grabbed the spotlight of the hip-hop kingdom was the unforgettable mud-slinging between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Two other names that equally found themselves deep in the hip-hop duel were Metro Boomin and Future. 

Months after the fallout, however, Boomin voiced regret over his anti-Drake stance, sparking the question of whether he, out of the three, had a real change of heart.

Metro Boomin and Future recently sat down for an interview with GQ for the Men of the Year issue to retrospect on the Drake debacle. Elliot Wilson on X shared snippets of the bites, including the part where Boomin was caught in the afterthoughts of what went down. Referring to his “anti-Drake tweet spree” Boomin wrote in response to Drake’s diss tracks, the producer showed regret, admitting it was certainly “out of character” for him.

Boomin explained that he and Drake had a “personal issue” that snowballed because of his disappointment. For those who took the situation beyond “rap entertainment,” Boomin said there was no middle ground to meet. Calling it “just regular sh--,” he believes the drama gained so much attention simply because it happened to have an audience. Despite some regret, Boomin clarified his tweets were his best tool since he does not rap, and there was no end to the diss tracks flying his way.

On the flip side, Future also laid bare his points regarding the all-engulfing rap dispute that had the entire industry picking sides. However, unlike Boomin, there was no ounce of regret, but only lament.

In their conversation with the GQ Men of the Year issue, Metro Boomin was not the only one back-tracking the days of dispute between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, but also Future. Initially, Future played coy about the “beef,” before posing a question about why he should care about it when no one seemed to care about him. Referring to Lamar’s “Big Three” bar on ‘Like That,’ a retortion to J. Cole’s diss track, Future raised an eyebrow at how K-Dot practically left him out of the game. 

Future sees the situation as something he should be “mad” about because not being part of the “Big Three” makes him “nobody” in his own song. Future and Metro Boomin’s perspectives on the debate are not in tangent with each other, but their admissions provide a broader picture of what went down. Although what happens here onwards remains to be seen, at least one thing is out in the clear: this debacle was anything by the book since the involved members were never into that serious of hatred.
