The 2023 MTV VMA is knocking on the door and Nicki Minaj is all set to bring her comedic flair once again as a host. While it is certain that the 44-year-old will lighten up the event, one cannot forget the 2021 host, Doja Cat, who created history at the VMAs. In the 2021 Video Music Awards, she became the first celebrity to host the event as well as get nominated for the video of the year. Apart from that, she also had everyone vibing with her hit performances and won two awards on the same night.

Doja Cat has been setting a record of winning one or more awards at the VMAs for the past three years. And now weeks after beefing with her own fans, the 27-year-old singer has achieved another historic feat!

With Taylor Swift, Doja Cat, and Miley Cyrus leading the pack of nominees at the upcoming event, it is safe to say that women have taken center stage this year. Especially in the world of music. After a five-week climb, the ‘Planet Her’ creator has finally made her way into going #1 in the UK. ‘Paint The Town Red’ is the chartbuster from Doja Cat’s upcoming album ‘Scarlet’ which became “the first solo female rap song in history” to achieve this milestone. Apart from that, the singer also has 15 Top 40 singles to her name in the UK charts, including songs like ‘Say So’ and ‘Kiss Me More’.

The #1 song also broke several Spotify records and secured the top spot at the platform’s US Top 50 daily chart. Additionally, it achieved a historic milestone of being the fastest solo female rap song to amass 100 million streams. Trailing behind the number 1 is Swift’s ‘Cruel Summer’ released in the year 2019. While Swift is leading with the most number of nominations at the VMAs, Doja Cat is up for five awards this year.

However, owing to her strained relationship with her fans, it is hard to tell whether the ‘Hot Pink’ artist garnered her fandom’s support.

Why Doja Cat has been beefing with her fans

The Grammy Award winner is popular for inviting trouble with her social media stunts. She almost got boycotted for calling Beyoncé “Beyon-key” in one of her TikTok videos. However, later she set the record straight through Instagram Live and even called Queen Bey her inspiration in an interview. This time, though, the songwriter had nothing in her defense as she picked a catfight with her fans over an unprovoked act. Just like Swifties and Army, Doja Cat’s fandom likes to call themselves “Kittenz”. However, this is not something that the Los Angeles-born appreciated.

She targeted all the fan accounts under this pseudonym and told them to “get a job”. This obviously didn’t sit well with the fandom, as they felt disrespected by the five-time Billboard Music Awards winner. She further urged those fan pages to delete their account and even went on to say that she does not love her fans. While many suggested that the singer was just pulling off her alter ego from the upcoming studio album ‘Scarlet’, this online dispute definitely upset her followers deeply.
