Lupe Fiasco Is Reviving Ye’s Child Rebel Soldier Hip-Hop Supergroup After Over a Decade With a New Spin
Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, has once again found himself at a juncture where he needs to mount a comeback. This comes despite the success of his recent album, 'Vultures'. From an empty slate of music creation to lawsuits and financial woes, every fan of the ‘Donda’ rapper is looking forward to him bouncing back stronger than ever. Amid this environment of dashed hopes, his former Chicago collaborator, Lupe Fiasco, has decided to dust off a joint project that was shelved over a decade ago.

Lupe Fiasco recently sat down for an interview with Stereogum and reminisced about the short-lived supergroup he had formed with Ye and Pharrell Williams. He reflected on how the group had to be shelved after just a few offerings and never really took off. Now, Fiasco is planning to revive the group, but with a solo project this time. "I'm gonna reboot CRS in the next six months, maybe next year," said the 42-year-old.
Fiasco also mentioned that his close friend, Tyler, The Creator, already has a record lined up for this new take on the group, which will bring back its "original energy". When it comes to what fans can expect, Fiasco hinted that the recordings could be anything from "loosie freestyle sh*t to a proper tape". However, there was no mention of Ye in the reboot of Child Rebel Soldier. Back in 2013, there were many reasons why the group fizzled out.
The major one, however, was the fact that the artists involved in the group, including Ye, were not as invested in it as they were in their solo endeavors.

Child Rebel Soldier grabbed a lot of attention back in the late 2000s. Before the group was officially formed, Lupe Fiasco, Ye, and Pharrell Williams had all teamed up on various tracks. They began the new group with 'Us Placers,' the track that was also featured on Ye's 'Can’t Tell Me Nothing' mixtape. However, after recording just a few songs together, the group could not move ahead.
The reason being that both Ye and Pharrell Williams were very busy with their solo projects at the time, which left little bandwidth for any CRS-related work. Lupe Fiasco once told MTV, "It’s going to take a lot of time to come off our schedules". However, it seems Fiasco does not need Ye or Williams, the former collaborators, anymore to bring his vision for Child Rebel Soldier to life.
