Kendrick Lamar Dethrones Tupac Shakur From Hip-Hop’s Most Iconic List With 'Not Like Us'

Kendrick Lamar is often compared to the legendary Tupac Shakur, thanks to his unique ways of paying homage to the late hip-hop icon. The Pulitzer-winning rapper has taken the baton of West Coast rap from Mr. Shakur and has since been taking his legacy forward. In fact, Tupac Shakur also became a central part of Lamar and Drake’s weeks-long heated diss war. Speaking of which, the most popular diss track that came out of the war, ‘Not Like Us,’ has recently reached a major milestone.

This milestone also officially let Lamar dethrone his idol- all in just three months of its release.

'Not Like Us,' with its cutting lyrics and catchy DJ Mustard beats, instantly topped the streaming songs charts upon its release. It also became the fastest rap song to reach 500 million streams on Spotify, breaking Drake's previous record with 2018's ‘God's Plan.’ However, nothing could be considered as big as the recent feat of Kendrick Lamar. 'Not Like Us' is now officially the most-streamed diss track of all time after surpassing Tupac Shakur’s 'Hit Em Up' in just three months.

'Not Like Us' was the ultimate knockout punch in Lamar’s war with the Canadian rapper, Drake. The track featured some of the most explicit accusations possible, even going as far as to paint Drake as a predator. It was 'Not Like Us' that led fans to rally behind Lamar and declare him the winner in the showdown. However, some of the credit for this win also goes to Tupac Shakur’s estate.

After Kendrick Lamar, Future, and Metro Boomin dropped their collaborative song 'Like That,' Drake responded with a social media release of his second single of the week, titled 'Taylor-Made Freestyle'. However, soon, the rapper received a cease-and-desist letter for using AI-generated vocals of Shakur in the track. The estate, which has constantly praised Lamar for respecting Shakur, threatened Drake with legal action.

This was the first time an artist as big as Drake used AI to mimic other artists’ voices, although nothing as iconic as Ye, aka Kanye West, who allegedly used AI to mimic his own voice. Nonetheless, these legal threats from Shakur’s estate led Drake to delete his diss track, which slowed down the ‘One Dance’ rapper’s momentum in the war.
