Katy Perry Gets the Heat From a Former ‘American Idol’ Contestant Over Her Latest Music
Showbiz is an infamous slippery slope, but if viewers are lucky enough, they get a front-row seat to watch the tables turn, and not only in the cinema alone. Tinseltown’s engine purrs a potent fuel blend of grit and defiance. When resilience and resistance are expertly mixed and achieved, relevance is the sparkling bonus that comes bottled with the package. Not every plot twist deserves a place in the annals of time, and Katy Perry’s recent run-in with controversy is a case in point.
After harmonizing her way to the pinnacle of success over the years, Perry is now facing a discordant note of criticism from a former American Idol contestant who struck a sour chord that resonated loudly online.

Katy Perry was a judge on American Idol for seven seasons, and back then, the contestants were on the receiving end of feedback. However, showbiz shows timing is everything, and now, the positions have been swapped with an ex-American Idol contestant slamming her music on social media. Steven James, a former contestant on the show recently took to TikTok while listening to Perry’s ‘OK’ track with a grin and eyes rolling (via The Hollywood Reporter).
“This can’t be the same person who eliminated me on American Idol 5 years ago,” James wrote on social media. Normally, fans spring to shield mode to defend their idols from online onslaughts, but this thread was a major deviation. Instead, the comment section became a battleground, with fans unleashing a barrage of biting criticism, mirroring the very same unforgiving tone of her former contestant.
While fans may have been unforgiving about the track, critics were also after Katy Perry’s latest album, ‘143.’
Katy Perry’s 143 album unleashed a torrent of backlash
Katy Perry may be orchestrating a symphony of self-reinvention, and the harmony of change resonates far beyond her personal life. This year, the songstress’ music tuned into a new frequency with ‘143.’ Perry left American Idol earlier this year and released her sixth studio album in September. And on December 20, she released a deluxe edition with four more songs, among which was ‘OK.’ Despite fans’ enthusiasm for her new music, the album garnered unfavorable reviews.

With a score of only 37 on Metacritic, ‘143’ was also blamed for using AI. Although AI controversies with music artists are no longer new, The Hollywood Reporter included the singer in this year’s list of Hollywood’s biggest winners and losers as the artist who “lost” big in showbiz. While Perry may have had her eyes on a comeback album, it looks like a resurgence was indeed in the cards, but not in the best of ways.
