Universal Music group is trying to act in order to stop AI from using music any further. But will they be successful? Music copyright expert gave his view on the case and the scope of AI during an interview.

AI technology is still in its infant stage but has already managed to threaten musicians. Acting on the issue is UMG, who wants Spotify and Apple to ban AI-generated music. But the music copyright expert disagrees and dubs the fear as irrational. Dr E. Michael Harrington revealed to RNBreakfast that “they (UMG) should not be worried at all.” He calls their fear irrational and assures that AO can only copy, it cannot be innovative on its own.

The clip gave an example of AI created song which has Kanye West singing Adele’s ‘Someone Like You.‘ The host asked whether Adele’s team can stop them for copyright infringement. But Harrington states that copyright does not cover one’s voice. He feels like apps like Chat GPT could be used by artists to create new content and give them ideas. They also gave an example of streaming services being opposed, before it became a norm.

Artists like Kanye West and Drake have been the favorites of AI users

Kanye West has kept his silence on AI rampantly using his voice and songs to create music. Drake, however, spoke up against it after listening to enough examples that used his voice. The last straw came when his voice was used by AI to sing Ice Spice’s ‘Munch’. Although there is no denying about the potential risks of such a copycat-expert technology, it will be seen whether regulations come in place to curb wrongful usage.
