Is Taylor Swift’s ‘But Daddy I Love Him’ About Joe Alwyn or Harry Styles? What Is It All About?
On Sunday night, Taylor Swift dropped a huge surprise for her fans. After winning her 13th Grammy and making history as the only musician to receive the Album of the Year award 4 times, the singer announced a brand new album. Although some Swifties were hoping for ‘Reputation (Taylor’s Version)’, they got something completely new. It was called ‘The Tortured Poets Club’.
While the name was enough to have fans linking the album to the pop sensation’s ex, Joe Alwyn, there was one song titled ‘But Daddy I Love Him’ that left fans wondering if it could be about Harry Styles.

Just yesterday, Taylor Swift took to her social media to share a look at a physical record that featured the track list on the side. Apart from her collaborating with stars like Post Malone and Florence + the Machine, her fans could not help but notice a track called ‘But Daddy I Love Him’. While some people joked that it could be a reference to Ariel from The Little Mermaid, the Swifties had other theories. Although some thought it could be another devastating break-up song about Joe Alwyn, others had their reasons to think it could be for Harry Styles.
Why Taylor Swift’s upcoming song could be about Joe Alwyn
Long before Travis Kelce stole the hearts of Taylor Swift and the Swifties, Joe Alwyn had managed to do the same. While the couple’s 6-year-long relationship ultimately did not work out, the timeline for her latest album seems to add up. When the singer unveiled ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ at the Grammy Awards, she also revealed that she had kept her plans under wraps for 2 years, which fans believe could prove that her upcoming tracks will be about the actor.
Apart from that, the song title also referenced the 1989 Disney movie, The Little Mermaid. It used Ariel’s iconic line, which Swift might relate to, given the level of privacy she had to keep up with during their relationship. Although the former couple have claimed it was what both of them wanted, the ‘Mean’ singer seems to be enjoying her time in the spotlight since her love story with Kelce began.
There might be a lot of reasons pointing towards ‘But Daddy I Love Him’ being for Joe Alwyn. However, the argument seems to stand for Harry Styles as well.
Why Taylor Swift’s ‘But Daddy I Love Him’ could be about Harry Styles
Over the years, Taylor Swift has written multiple songs about Harry Styles. From ‘Style’ to ‘Out Of The Woods’ and more, the pop sensation gave her fans many tragic songs. However, now, fans think that her upcoming ‘But Daddy I Love Him’ could be about the former One Direction member.
Some Swifties seem to believe that it could be about the 30-year-old as he was spotted wearing a shirt with the same quote in 2020. His fans might have just associated that quote with the ‘Watermelon Sugar’ artist. However, it looks like they are not the only ones as some of the ‘Cruel Summer’ singer’s fans have also joined the stans.
Unfortunately, it looks like the world will have to wait until ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ album comes out to see who the track is really for, as Swift has not confirmed nor denied the rumors yet.
