“I can’t spiritually afford it”- Halsey Regrets Her Musical Comeback in Light of Some Fan Criticism

Criticism is a part of music consumption, that is a given. But these days, it does not take long for the internet to turn into a breeding ground for cruel and heartless trolling of celebrities, in the name of criticism. Halsey recently made a comeback to music after battling with a serious health condition. However, the reception she received was exactly what she feared most, that had caused her to have second thoughts about returning in the first place. Her new single was not received well by fans, leaving Halsey feeling regretful.

In response, Halsey penned a vulnerable note on social media, voicing her disappointment over the backlash from her own fans.

Halsey just released a new track last week, 'Lucky', which is a reworking of Britney Spears' own hit of the same name from 2000. However, the single was soon trolled by some fans, leading the singer to "regret coming back". Halsey called out her own fans with a note on Tumblr, who are meaner to her than anyone else. Especially after her health issues, for which she almost lost her life, Halsey is not ready to take anything that does not make her happy. "I can’t spiritually afford it," said the 29-year-old.

Ahead of 'Lucky', Halsey released 'The End', the lead single of her upcoming fifth studio album, last month, which was her first release since 2021. During the promotion of the lead track, the songstress also shared on social media that she feels "lucky to be alive". However, the sentiment soon shifted after criticism took a toll on her, not only from fans but also from the legend, Britney Spears.

Halsey's 'Lucky' was dropped on July 26. Hours after the premiere, Britney Spears took to X to share her thoughts about the song, mostly negative. "I feel harassed, violated, and bullied," wrote the 'Toxic' singer. Spears, who is known for being unfiltered, at least nowadays, shared how she did not expect Halsey, an artist she "looked up to and admired", would portray her "as a superficial pop star with no heart or concern". However, she soon took the post down from the social media platform, with a clarification.

It was "fake news," apparently, and that was not Spears on her phone, in her own words. "I love Halsey and that’s why I deleted it !!!," wrote Spears. Even Halsey herself responded to Spears' post, in support of her, stating, "You continue to inspire me every day". With Halsey now regretting her choice of making a comeback, it is yet to see whether her anticipated album would see the light of the day,
