Last year, Sabrina Carpenter gave fans earworm after earworm. Her bouncy pop chartbusters wiggled their way into everyone’s brain and refused to leave until they got tired of them. The lucky year catapulted Carpenter to pop stardom, which also helped her earn six Grammy nominations—surpassing many legends in the pop world. But while her songs have been belted out by fans over and over again, dancing joyfully to the beats, there is one particular track that the songstress believes has more to it than what meets the ear.

Last year, we all found ourselves saying “that’s that me, espresso” multiple times. While the chorus of the Song of the Summer did not make much sense grammatically, it still became impossible to get out of our heads. Despite the seemingly nonsensical lyrics becoming a fast earworm, Sabrina Carpenter admits it is not as simple to sing as it seems. In a recent chat with BBC Maestro, the pop sensation revealed that “Espresso was actually a much harder song” to perform live because there is not much room for breath.
Carpenter explained that although the melodies of the track might sound easy and playful, performing it live is tough, especially as it is also paired with an energetic choreography. The vintage funk, disco, black-and-white, 60s-inspired vibes of the track helped it soar to the top of the charts last year. However, after a while, it did become a bit overplayed—something even Carpenter acknowledges.
During a performance last year, Carpenter even apologized to fans who had grown tired of listening to ‘Espresso’.

“If you’re sick of it, I’m sorry,” Carpenter said before performing the massive hit. But then, she added, “If not, sing along!”—and with that, the room erupted with fans standing up, whipping out their phones, and singing along with Carpenter. While it is fun and easy for fans to belt out the track in the crowd, Carpenter has now admitted the pressures of tackling the pop chartbuster on stage.
