“Feels crazy”- Tate McRae Is Overwhelmed With Britney Spears Comparisons as She Announces New Music at VMAs
Blake Lively may have thrown some fashion kudos Britney Spears' way this year, but Tate McRae brought that Spears magic right to the MTV VMAs stage in 2024! The Canadian pop sensation stepped out in a fab long sleeve mini dress by Robert Cavalli, giving major flashbacks to Spears’ iconic navy number from the 2001 VMAs. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, McRae could not help but gush about the homage, admitting it “feels crazy” to have Spears’ attention and teasing some exciting new music on the horizon.
McRae’s performances have often drawn comparisons to Spears, thanks in part to her killer choreography. She is totally flattered by the comparison, revealing she was a big Spears fan growing up. As McRae celebrated her idol, her own music video, set to drop tomorrow and described as “very pop and ballsy” took center stage. With her daring revival of fashion and sound, McRae’s teasers had fans absolutely losing it and for all the best reasons.

Britney Spears totally slayed the 2001 MTV VMAs in a stunning black lace Dolce & Gabbana minidress, before famously taking the stage with a python for her legendary ‘I’m a Slave 4 U’ performance. This unforgettable moment was not her only nod to the pop princess, though—she spilled to PEOPLE last year that she channeled Britney Spears’ vibes for her ‘Exes’ music video.
While McRae’s tribute was an absolute showstopper, there was another iconic homage to the queen of pop at the VMAs this year.

Britney Spears might not have been at the 2024 MTV VMAs, but her iconic legacy was totally front and center. Host and nominee Megan Thee Stallion, who dazzled the crowd with her own show-stopping moments, wowed everyone with a surprise costume change that was a loving nod to Spears’ legendary 2001 ‘I’m a Slave 4 U’ look. Stallion even had a giant yellow python draped over her shoulders just like her inspiration did!
Stallion recreated the whole outfit, from the embellished green cutout top and sparkly shorts to the butterfly body stickers. She joked about her attempt to handle the python in true Spears style, only to realize that wrangling a snake was not exactly her forte. So, even though the pop queen was not there in person, her presence was unmistakably felt through these fabulous tributes.
