Taylor Swift is currently navigating a battle against a major record label, Big Machine Records, which has been causing ripples in the traditional music industry structure. Ever since she waded into the highly publicized dispute, a wave of uncertainty prompted major record labels to revisit their clauses. Amidst the buzz, fans on X, formerly Twitter, came across an old tweet from the rap icon who used to be pretty famous for sparring with Swift- Kanye West.
West and Swift may not have had the smoothest relationship with each other in the industry. But they have a legendary status in their own distinctive spheres. Kanye West shared a tweet in the year 2020, criticizing labels for stripping artists off their rights. “When you sign a music deal you sign away your rights”, said the ‘Donda’ rapper in his tweet. This tweet resurfaced 3 years after Billboard reported how major record labels are now changing their contract guidelines, following Swift’s dispute, to avoid losses stemming from re-recordings.

It all started after Swift signed a record deal with Republic Records in November 2018, following the termination of Swift’s contract with the Big Machine. However, the new owner Scooter Braun acquired all of Swift’s first six studio albums, copyrighted by Big Machines. This triggered a long-drawn chain of conflicts, pulling various musicians, journalists, politicians, and scholars to join the cause along the way.
As Swift continues to revolutionize the music industry, fans remember the only time Kanye West and Taylor Swift were on the same bandwidth.

Kanye West and Taylor Swift’s feud has been a key conversation in the tabloid world for years. Eleven years following the fiasco, it was surprising to see the artists on the same page regarding an issue. While the artists may come forward to each other’s support in the future as well, this understated sign was heartwarming for fans for the time being.
