Drake Continues Tupac Chronicles, Mere Days After Fueling Kendrick Lamar Beef With His Car

Published 07/22/2024, 10:53 PM EDT

The Kendrick Lamar-Drake beef has long left the chat, but the embers of the fireworks persist and that too, in abundance. Although the direct slams have hit a pause for now, indirect jabs remain an everyday practice, particularly following Lamar’s testy suggestions for Drizzy to return Tupac Shakur’s crown ring. In the weeks that followed, the Canadian native chose to respond with a cunning tactic by dropping big bucks on the car in which Mr. Shakur was shot. Days later, the rapper was seen continuing to follow the Tupac-related updates.

While Drake’s admiration for Tupac is well known, the recent references have sparked speculation about whether they reflect genuine respect or his intentions to provoke Lamar further.

Drake recently caught everyone off guard, especially Kendrick Lamar fans, by purchasing the BMW 7 Series in which Tupac Shakur was shot 28 years ago for a staggering $1.75 million. Despite skepticism about the car’s authenticity—some suggesting it might be a replica or a similar model—Drake continued his Tupac-themed gestures. Just days later, he took to his Instagram story to showcase a Tupac-inspired outfit.

In a mirror selfie, he sported a Makaveli tee and baggy denim paired with green shiny studded shoes while flexing his braided hair. While Drake’s streetwear game was on point, his ongoing Tupac tributes might have ruffled a few feathers among Lamar’s fans, who are growing increasingly frustrated with his Tupac references. Similarly, although it is hard to say whether Drake is deliberately aligning himself with Tupac Shakur's legacy, he has certainly stirred the industry he is already a part of.

Now that things have well escalated between the rappers, it is an ideal time to revisit the roots of the feud related to Mr. Shakur for fans who are still unfamiliar.

After the tense dispute with Drake, Kendrick Lamar made a notable and unforgettable return to the stage at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on Juneteenth for The Pop Out: Ken & Friends. During his performance, he added a surprising twist to his track 'Euphoria,' which he had released in April amid the feud, incorporating a new verse: “Give me Tupac’s ring back and maybe I’ll give you a little respect.”

The ring in question is one of hip-hop's most iconic pieces of jewelry, featuring a 14-karat crown adorned with cabochon rubies and pave diamonds. It is inscribed with "Pac & Dada 1996," marking Tupac’s engagement to Kidada Jones. In 2023, Drake reportedly purchased the ring at a Sotheby’s auction for $1.01 million. However, Lamar’s jab at Drake, criticizing the alleged commodification of Tupac’s legacy through the ring, has yet to deter Drake, who remains unfazed by the back-to-back slams.
