Taylor Swift may not be a politician, but her influence on American politics is so substantial that she would give even the most seasoned players a run for their money if she ever dipped her toes into that field. With 53% of American adults proudly calling themselves Swifties, according to a 2023 survey by Morning Consult, the pop star could mobilize a colossal voter turnout for whichever party she decides to throw her weight behind- and the Democratic Party better brace themselves, as they would be receiving a hefty boost from Taylor Swift.

Just a few hours after Taylor Swift made her political preferences known, the singer set off a wave of voter enthusiasm in America.

Taylor Swift had been trying to steer clear of US politics for the most part this year. However, with fake endorsements being bandied about by some politicians and relentless scrutiny from fans about her political leanings, she was ultimately compelled to make her support for Kamala Harris and her party public on Instagram. The songstress also shared a registration link to help guide voters for the election. This led to a surge of 400,000 visitors to Vote.gov within just 24 hours of her posting the link.

The site experienced a tenfold increase in traffic compared to the previous week. The following day, it saw 27,000 new registrations and 80,000 people checking their registration status. As one of the most influential celebrities on the global stage, Swift has the power to sway voters’ opinions even with social media posts. Perhaps that is why her Instagram endorsement drew sharp criticism from Republican figures.

After Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris, she started facing a lot of criticism from the opposition. Donald Trump, during an interview on Fox & Friends, took a swipe at her, saying, "She seems to always endorse a Democrat, and she’ll probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.” Meanwhile, Trump’s vice presidential candidate, JD Vance, disparaged Swift in a lengthy post on X, labeling her as "fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americans".

Elon Musk, the owner of X and known for his verbal sparring on his social media platform, also joined the bandwagon, having been recently endorsed by Trump to lead his efficiency commission. He could not resist taking a jab at Swift in a post, saying, "Fine Taylor-you win-I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life". Despite the criticism and backlash from the opposition, Taylor Swift has made it clear that she is sticking with her left-wing support.
