Did Taylor Swift Really Impact the Finance Scorecard of Universal Music Group With ‘The Tortured Poets Department’?

Taylor Swift dropped her eleventh studio album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ on April 19 and since then, fans have followed avenues to get a copy of the vinyl and CD. While Spotify records have been broken with extensive streaming of the album within hours of its release, with its upscale promotional tactics, the album’s talks have been on everyone’s lips throughout socials. However, with that bar of reception, it is only justified that both Swift and Universal Music Group, the label she is linked with, will pocket some big bucks from the revenue.

Yet, not everything fits the glove like one expects and with ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, the reality has hit on the financial fronts.

How much did Universal Music Group profit from Taylor Swift’s latest album?

Following the release of 'The Tortured Poets Department,' Adrien de Saint Hilaire, an analyst from Bank of America, estimated the album's potential value to Universal Music Group (via Financial Times), the label Taylor Swift has been affiliated with since 2018. This estimation is two-fold. Firstly, since music streaming revenues heavily rely on a handful of popular tracks played repeatedly, the album may hold "minimal" value to its publisher. Furthermore, Swift's retention of primary recording rights entitles her to larger royalties.

Likewise, this potentially diminishes her value compared to the average UMG artist. Although Universal Music Group could benefit from the sale of physical records, primarily driven by the surge in demand for souvenir copies on vinyl and CD, because of the heavy reliance on these formats, group margins per sale could decline. However, given that Swift's contribution to the label's profit in 2023 amounted to only 2-3%, as reported by Illuminate while her music consumption in the US in 2023 stood at 1.8%, the impact could be relatively modest.

Even though the turnaround is not something one would have expected, in the market sales, however, Taylor Swift is reigning and breaking records like there is no tomorrow.

Taylor Swift dropped some genius PR tactics with Spotify ahead of ‘The Tortured Poets Department’s’ release and the aftermath sounds like a massive success. Within the album's first day, it sold 1.6 million units, including 600,000 vinyl copies in the US alone. Swift's role as the driving force behind the vinyl resurgence has been acknowledged previously, and her latest release solidifies her status as the reigning queen of vinyl.

In the realm of streaming, 'The Tortured Poets Department' garnered over 300 million streams worldwide on its debut day, breaking records as the most-streamed album and Swift as the most-streamed artist in a single day. While Universal Music Group's direct profitability from the album may not be substantial according to the assessments by analysts, Swift, the primary figure behind the album, is expected to generate significant profits, nonetheless.
