Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea podcast recently featured Dance Moms star Abby Lee Miller, who had a critical take on Taylor Swift’s dancing in the Eras Tour. Miller stated that Swift’s moves were “difficult to watch” and suggested that tour choreographer Mandy Moore skillfully masked her weaknesses. According to Miller, Swift struggled when attempting to match the professional dancers but excelled when she allowed them to take the spotlight. She praised Moore’s decision to position Swift separately rather than in full synchronization with the dance ensemble.
Lee Miller also attributed Taylor Swift’s lack of polished technique to her childhood focus on songwriting rather than dance. “When she was a little girl, she was hunched over that guitar,” she said, noting that Swift’s parents prioritized music over dance lessons. While Miller acknowledged Swift’s talent in other areas, her remarks implied that technical dance ability was never a strong suit for the global pop star.
While Lee Miller's critique focuses on Swift's technical dance skills, the pop star's performances have always been about much more than choreography.
The evolution of Taylor Swift’s performance style is not about steps, but about storytelling
Taylor Swift’s stagecraft has never hinged on the intricacies of footwork but rather on the alchemy of presence and prose. Once a young woman armed with a guitar and a dream, she sang her stories into existence, a quiet force with a well-worn six-string. As ‘1989’ introduced pop rhythms, she swayed and twirled, and with ‘Reputation’, she prowled and prowled well. Yet through every transformation, the pulse of her performance remained the same.

Now, with the Eras Tour, she commands stadiums not by dazzling them with precision but by pulling them into a story they already know by heart. Her musical talent, great performances have people like Millie Bobby Brown praising her for the magic that she brings. So, the pop star does not need a perfectly executed pirouette to stir a crowd into hysteria. Whether she is standing still in a golden spotlight, floating across the stage in a ball gown, or strutting in thigh-high boots, the audience follows, not her steps, but her every word.
