“…Cuz People Need Cheerleaders” – Tyler the Creator on How Kanye West and Jay Z Helped Him Grow
Singing songs from his adverse past, Tyler The Creator rose to fame among the hip-hop cadres. The rapper initially started his journey as an artist on blogging platforms and quickly gained popularity. In many interviews, he has admitted the role of key, influential rappers such as Kanye West and Jay Z who have helped him grow up the ranks. The 32-year-old rapper has also spoken highly of the big-time rappers who made him what he is today. And this time it was in a book.
In an extract from Pharrell Williams’ memoir Carbon: Pressure and Time, Tyler The Creator opened up his heart. “Cuz people need cheerleaders, and just having y’all just there really allowed me to get to where I’m at,” said the rapper. Tyler the Creator went from a kid with a rough past to one of the biggest names in hip-hop. Additionally, his words show that West has played the role of a mentor to Tyler as well as Travis Scott, among others.

In the published excerpt from GQ, Tyler expressed his appreciation to Pharrell Williams for the support and guidance he has received and also extended his gratitude, towards West and Jay Z. The 32-year-old rapper said: “…Jay and Ye, all these folks who I love, the greatest, took a liking to me early.” He also went on to highlight how their motivation helped him achieve the confidence to win ahead in life.
In the world of hip-hop, there is never any constant. It is a scene where records are made and constantly broken. Also, it is a ground where new artists form and retire at the same time. Given the scale of the industry, it is reasonable to assume that any newcomer will have a hard time going up the ranks. Thus, support from mentors such as West certainly goes a long way in producing legends.
Tyler has consistently vocalized his admiration for Kanye West, with whom he has had the privilege of collaborating on numerous occasions.

Travis Scott has openly admitted his love and admiration for Kanye West. The rapper has been a mentor, a collaborator, and even family in the ‘Utopia’ singer’s life. Moreover, Travis Scott is now playing catch-up to the ‘Donda’ singer. Moreover, Scott may now be looking to break his mentor’s record with a streaming milestone. Judging by the numbers, Scott may well pass by West if all goes steady.
Tyler, the Creator, has been an admirer of Kanye West ever since he was a teenager. They have worked together on tracks like ‘Smuckers’ from Tyler’s album ‘Cherry Bomb’ and ‘Puppet’ from ‘Igor’. They have also shared the stage for performances, including an appearance at West and Jay Z’s joint SXSW show back, in 2014.
