Cannot ‘Shake it Off’: Study Confirms Taylor Swift Eras Tour Shows Caused an Earthquake
Soaking in the spotlight from the zenith of her musical career, Taylor Swift has amassed a wealth of success and recognition ever since she embarked upon the Eras Tour in March 2023. Furthermore, at a little more than half of it wrapped up, the shows still have a long way to go before their conclusion. Appearing to be increasing in hype and intensity following the announcement of an incoming album, it turns out that the Swifties never hit a low to begin with.
A recent publication has found direct connections between the singer, her fanbase, and an earthquake in an unexpected amalgam.

In August 2023, Taylor Swift took her Eras Tour concerts to the SoFi stadium in Inglewood, California, home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. A whopping turnout of more than 70,000 Swifties on each of the five days of the shows had a direct seismic impact. In Seismological Research Letters, a group of Caltech researchers found that the “dancing and jumping motions” during the shows gave rise to an overall magnitude 2.3 earthquake.
Interestingly, scientists also found how the tremors ebbed during pauses and how their energy varied during different songs. Confirming that the recorded seismic waves did not come from sound music or reverberations but from Swifties, the publication likened the occurrence to a similar “Swift Quake” in Seattle a month before, again because of the Eras Tours. Additionally, in a fascinating coincidence, the biggest tremor of 0.85 magnitude came during the ‘Shake it Off’ song.
Anyone who missed the occurrence last year can look forward to another such happening as the tours stay set to return to Los Angeles.
