Taylor Swift and the Oscar Award have been a forever will-they-won’t-they duo. For years, the singer has tried to bag an Academy Award in the Original Song category. However, snubs were all she got in return. The one that hurt the most, at least the Swifties, who were enraged later, was All Too Well not making the final shortlist in the 2023 Oscars for the Best Live Action Short Film nominations. Will 2024 see a reversal of this bad luck with Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour?

Given the concert film’s meteoric success, Swift could gain recognition from the Academy. But will that happen?

The short answer is: no. Despite the film earning a Golden Globes nomination (and subsequently losing to Barbie), it won’t be earning an Oscar for multiple reasons. For starters, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour did not earn a nomination in any category—the film was not eligible for them in the first place. Given the nature of the film, the only category it could have targeted is the Best Documentary category, but two factors were against it.

The first and the major roadblock for the concert film was the Academy guideline. Section II, B of the rules deems documentary works that are “promotional or instructional” and “essentially unfiltered records of performances” ineligible for nomination in the category. Given how The Eras Tour featured Swift’s SoFi stadium show performances, the Academy would classify it as an “unfiltered record of performances.” But with some luck, the concert film could have circumvented this rule.

As per an EW report, the Documentary Branch Executive Committee often considers special cases each year and Eras Tour could have been one such case except for the second roadblock: its release date. The Swift directorial reached the cinema on October 13, 2023, 11 days after the set deadline of October 2, 2023, for submitting a work for consideration for the award.

These key factors made the concert film miss out on an Oscar nomination. However, as mentioned earlier, this is not the first near-miss Swift has had with the Academy. But the singer can still hold hope to bag an award in the near future.

Can Taylor Swift ever win an Oscar?

While Taylor Swift had a tough luck getting major filming awards with The Eras Tour, the same may not be the case with her future project. Back in 2022, when the singer was gunning for an Oscar for All Too Well, reports were out about Swift writing and directing her first feature film with Searchlight Pictures. This unnamed film could be the key to the 34-year-old bagging an Academy nod after years of trying.

Another far-fetched possibility is her rumored Deadpool 3 appearance as Dazzler. If the Ryan Reynolds starrer can beat the tight competition for an Oscar nomination and if the singer is really starring in it, perhaps she could gun for an award in the Supporting Role category.

Of the two options, given the Academy’s track record, the former has more chance of happening despite a lack of updates on the unnamed project. But can Swift really beat her bad luck with the Oscars? Share your thoughts in the comments.
