Since the music industry is in an all-time flux, navigating the faces of success from yesterday to tomorrow becomes quite a task. Despite the hardship, charts inevitably deter artistic fate. Some might question the finality of charts, but plenty take them as gospel. Azealia Banks, however, is outside the doubting camp. Instead, frustrated with a popular list of the greatest 21st-century pop stars, she created her own. The curveball is that her move sparked a fresh wave of drama; this time from fans who were not exactly on board with her picks.

Billboard has been gradually releasing the names of the 25 greatest 21st-century pop stars, with only the two top spots left to be announced. However, responding to a fan prediction that Taylor Swift will bag the top spot when it should be Beyoncé, Azealia Banks showed what the list should look like. Starting with Ye aka Kanye West at the top, Britney Spears, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Missy Elliot, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, T-Pain, Norah Jones, and Swift follow in order.

According to Billboard’s list which begins from the third position, Rihanna is leading the pack of the greatest 21st-century pop stars followed by Drake, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Ye, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Adele, Usher, Eminem, and Nicki Minaj among others. While  Taylor Swift and Queen Bey are the names missing from that list, Azealia Banks’ ranking was far from what and who the fans perceive as the real deal.

Although artists clash with fans for various reasons, Azealia Banks might have struck a nerve a bit too hard this time, leaving them to toss it all into the “trash.”

The debate about who deserves the top spot of Billboard’s greatest 21st-century pop stars caught many fandoms in the crosshairs. With each trying to make their case overpowering the other, it is not exactly difficult to understand why fans take these charts so much to their heart. However, after Azealia Banks threw her picks in the ring, even those fans fighting it out a day ago found themselves in the same boat, throwing shade at her.

While Banks may have found Billboard’s list unconvincing, fans straight up declared hers as “biased.”

A few folks did not even spare from calling her “jealous,” despite no reason. Even then, some fans thought her listing was rational, but Norah Jones’ inclusion may have raised eyebrows. Ultimately, the fact the fans rejected the rankings and brought their own highlights how impossible it is to reach a unanimous decision when ranking artists because, in this playbook, each fandom fiercely believes in playing by its own rules.
