“We had a job to do”- Ariana Grande Claps Back at Critics Over Her Voice Transformation During ‘Wicked’ Promotions
As the music industry brought back its favorites and went full swing, one of the most important members of the force decided that she would sit on two chairs at the same time. One in the grand musical that has taken over Hollywood for the better half of the past year, Wicked, and the other on the music charts as a top artist. However, the former earned Ariana Grande as much criticism as praise.
Wicked, the musical in itself, and the promotions have become two separate entities. With the latter having earned hefty criticism for everything ranging from her body weight to her voice, Ariana Grande has finally decided to clap back.

Throughout the promotion of Wicked, Ariana Grande, and specifically her personal life, loomed majorly over the spotlight. While the brouhaha revolved around her relationship earlier, critics jumped at the change in her voice and how it was different from the real one that they were accustomed to. During the Wicked press tour, the songstress reflected on the much-discussed voice change and gave it back to the haters with a classy "we had a job to do" while explaining how difficult it is to drop the mannerisms you work so hard to adapt.
Grande plays Glinda in Wicked, which in itself is a character with a devoted fanbase. Understandably, the songstress went tooth and nail in order to not just secure the role but play it to the best of her ability, which, as she has stated in interviews, involved a lot of method acting, explaining how she has carried bits of Glinda's mannerisms off-screen.
Ariana Grande would not be the first to talk about how hard it is to dissociate from a character, with Elizabeth Debicki confessing to the ghost of Princess Diana still lingering in her mannerisms. However, it was Grande's drastic voice change that time and again became the cynosure of debates, so much so that this was not the first time the actress addressed it.
Ariana Grande explains her voice change
While the audiences may have qualms about how well a singer sings without auto-tune, with some of the audience's favorite singers coming underwater, Ariana Grande has managed to stay high, much like her vocal range. From shocking even The Weeknd to impersonating almost anybody perfectly, Grande is known for the adaptability that her voice possesses. However, it was the consistency that she pulled it off with during Wicked that got fans talking.
