"I don’t need to prove --it"- How Willow Smith Stepped Away From the Nepo Baby Label Through Her Hard Work
Willow Smith made her acting debut at just seven years old alongside her father, Will Smith, in I Am Legend. But by the time she turned 10, she had shifted her focus to singing. Smith dropped her hit single 'Whip My Hair,' which not only became a viral sensation but also earned platinum status. Still, despite her impressive record and cult following with hits like 'Wait a Minute!,' Smith has not been able to shake off the image of a privileged, silver-spoon-fed star kid. But it seems she is not about to let her famous parents take credit for her success.
Willow Smith once clapped back at the 'nepo baby' chatter surrounding her music career with a fitting response.

Earlier this year, Willow Smith opened up about the 'nepo baby' discourse ahead of the release of her album 'Empathogen'. In an interview with Allure in May, she admitted to feeling insecure about being labeled a 'nepo baby'. She shared that this insecurity drove her to “work really hard to try to prove them wrong.” But, she quickly added, “nowadays, I don’t need to prove --it to anybody.”
Smith highlighted her “strong spirit” and made it clear that even without famous parents, she would “still be a weirdo and a crazy thinker.” Reflecting on her music journey, the 24-year-old explained that her genre-hopping mirrors her personal growth as she figures out what kind of artist she truly wants to be. Smith also argued that the 'nepo baby' label does not entirely fit her.
Smith's identity as a Black woman does not quite make her eligible to be considered a nepo baby, according to the artist.
Willow Smith on why her privilege is not quite what it seems
Having two megastar parents makes it easy for people to assume Willow Smith’s success came handed to her on a silver platter. But she does not see it that way. In fact, she believes that being a Black woman in the music industry has presented some very unique challenges to her, making her experience very different from the typical 'nepo baby' story.

In the same Allure interview, Smith explained that the industry often tries to keep Black women in their place, which means she has had to put in extra effort to carve out her path. Smith also reiterated that her "determination and creative output are not exactly consistent with nepo babyhood” either. But even with these strong arguments, separating herself from her famous last name might be easier said than done.
