Magic: The Gathering is Coming Netflix As Animated Series
One of the most beloved and popular card games is being adapted into an animated series. Magic: The Gathering is on its way to Netflix. After being gathered and slapped by players over 25 years, it has finally earned its own series, naturally. And it seems it will be one of the most powerful crossovers. So, here we are, gathered all known details about the upcoming animated series of Netflix so far.
Magic: The Gathering is originally a collectible and digital collectible card game created by Richard Garfield. It was also the first trading card game and has approximately thirty-five million players as of December 2018. On the other hand, the Russo Brothers of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse are working on the upcoming animated series as executive producers. They have been fans of Magic: The Gathering for a really long time. And they expressed the series as a “true passion project” during an interview. So, if we consider their amazing works and also being fans of the game, something great is clearly ahead of us coming. Netflix, Wizards of the Coast, and Hasbro are all working together to put the beloved game for us on the small screen. It seems another nostalgic feast is coming.
Magic: The Gathering has a long fantasy story following gifted mages called Planeswalkers. They cross between worlds in MTG’S own Multiverse. Many novels and episodic chapters can be found on the MTG’s website, although they are just being written as short but sweet texts on cards. So, the story will clearly base on the already existing stories. The series will be creating its own script while keeping the important characters’ parts. Netflix has said in its press release that, MTG series will focus on the Planeswalkers “as they contend with stakes larger than anyone world can hold.”

Also, the CEO of animation studio Octopie, Isaac Krauss said in a statement that,
“Our goal is to not only tell a compelling story leveraging Magic: The Gathering’s incredible body of work but to also push the medium and perception of storytelling through animation. This series will cross the genres of suspenseful thriller, horror, and drama with deeply developed characters the likes of which are not often seen in animation.”
So, what the story contains is still a mystery. There is not much more information about the upcoming animated series yet. But at least we know that it won’t be targeting the kids.
Netflix hasn’t confirmed any cast members for the animated series yet. But it seems they’ll suppose to hire professional voice actors for emphasizing the story’s focus on its characters right.
Wizards of the Coast President, Chris Cocks made a statement and said,
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Joe and Anthony Russo to bring Magic: The Gathering’s rich and diverse cast of characters and worlds to Netflix in a way that will delight our many fans and those new to the franchise.”
Jarvis also told that they’re looking across the MTG multiverse for which characters to include. But he also emphasized the franchise’s present identity as well.

“Magic is very character-centric and we talked about some of the places that we believe would be best brought to life by animation, about the characters we believe that would be best served by animation.”
Netflix had officially announced it first in June 2019 and there’s been no news of the series since then. And since last April, it’s being written as we heard. That probably means they should’ve finished writing by now and are in development and might start shooting for a 2022 release date.
We all know that animated shows often take much longer to produce than live-action. So it will probably take a while before fans get to see the world of Planeswalking. So, we will of course keep posting as we get more news about Magic: The Gathering. Until then, you might want to take a look at what’s new on Netflix this week. See you!
