Lucie Jourdan and Jacoba Ballard Brace Themselves for an Avalanche of Siblings as ‘Our Father’ Streams on Netflix: “There’s a high likelihood that’s going to happen”
Seeing the recent trends of true crime-related content on Netflix, it is safe to say that the platform is milking the genre dry. But, right when you think your true crime obsession has peaked, the streaming giant releases another intriguing project. The latest in this line is Our Father. But, this documentary is very different from others in many ways. Here’s how:
What is Our Father on Netflix about?
Our Father begins with the life of Jacoba Ballard, a young woman who never felt like she belonged with her family. After taking a DNA test, she discovered that she has a bunch of siblings from an unidentified father. Further digging and investigation revealed some very shocking truths.

This “unidentified father” was a man named Donald Cline, a fertility doctor. Cline was highly respected in his community. He is what many describe as a “philanthropist” or an “elder in church“. Hence, it was more than difficult for people to digest that this doctor inseminated close to a hundred women with his sperm without their knowledge or consent, yielding numerous unknown kids.
How has this affected the life of Lucie Jourdan and Jacoba Ballard?

A discovery like this is life-changing, to say the least. Not only did Jacoba Ballard realize that the man she assumed was her biological father wasn’t her biological father, but also discovered that her actual biological father committed a psychotic crime that has affected and continues to affect the lives of many. Hence, this 41-year-old has now made it “her life’s work to understand the extent of what Cline did to his patients.”
So far, Ballard has discovered over 90 “siblings” born between 1972 and 1988. But, Cline was a practicing doctor until 2009, meaning that there might yet be a lot more to discover. The director of the Netflix documentary, Lucie Jourdan, said that watching the documentary might potentially make a “sibling” realize that they are actually related to Cline. She commented, “there’s a high likelihood that’s going to happen.”
