Why are costumes so important in Inventing Anna?
If you’ve seen the video, you must have noticed the emphasis Julia Garner has laid on the costumes and wig she dons through the course of the Inventing Anna. We have seen how important this aspect of filmmaking is in movies and shows like The Great Gatsby, The Harder They Fall, and Emily in Paris. But, looking the part plays an extra important role in this upcoming Netflix Original series.
For those of our readers who are unaware of Anna’s origin, the protagonist is inspired by Anna Sorokin. Sorokin is a convicted fraudster who pretended to be a German heiress and found her way into the lives of the New York bourgeoisie. She scams banks, hotels, and some extremely wealthy people, all done merely by blending in just right.

“The role that fashion plays in the series is very big,” Garner said. She continued, “fashion is very important to Anna” and no wonder! From all the extremely affluent people we’ve seen on television, we know that dressing up the right way is crucial. It helps people of the same background to blend in and not stand out. This is something Anna needed to do to succeed in her, well, career. And the creators of Inventing Anna made sure they brought this facet to life properly.
At the very first glance, Anna’s attire might look exaggerated, like Emily Cooper from Emily in Paris. But Garner explains how this is something that the creators did on purpose. The people around her and the viewers needed to believe that she is an eccentric heiress.
