Lights, camera, no action! Oscar 2025 nominations have been announced and clearly not everyone is happy about it. Huge snubs have dominated discussion, with Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, and Selena Gomez a few of the high-profile actresses snubbed in the cold. Their respective films, Maria, Babygirl, and Emilia Pérez generated buzz, but not enough for the Oscars, it seems. It is clearly a disappointing time for these talented actors, but a creative tickle for Will Ferell.
Having released Will & Harper this year, if not for his own belief then from the critical acclaim that the doumentary had received, Will Ferrell was unwilling to let go of the Oscar snub without a little jab.

Will Ferrell is not taking the Will & Harper Oscar snub lying down. On The Late Show, Ferrell let out a little inner troll, mocking the documentary branch for not acknowledging his film in a big, fat, and laugh-filled manner. He trolled at the expense of the documentary branch, announcing them "a bunch of losers." That tongue-in-cheek shot, even with a smile, clearly expresses Ferrell's disappointment at not seeing the film in nominee lists.
The omission of the documentary has clearly irritated Will Ferrell, who vented about it in humor during The Late Show. The documentary's journey, having won such praise at Sundance and then winding its way onto the Oscars shortlist, made its eventual snub even more disorienting. Most saw its powerful narrative and representational value worth acknowledging, and its omission a sore one in Oscar competition for this year.
Will & Harper's Oscar snub stings, not just for Will Ferrell, but because its heartfelt story of friendship and acceptance deserved recognition.
What is Will & Harper about?
Will Ferrell's humor, however cutting, is not just about sour grapes. Will & Harper tells a deeply personal story about friendship and acceptance, following Ferrell's road trip with his transgender friend. The film's snub likely stings more because of its important message. Ferrell's "loser" comment, while funny, also underscores the perceived disconnect between the film's critical acclaim and the Academy's decision. It is a trollish protest, but a protest nonetheless, highlighting the unpredictable nature of awards season.

Will & Harper snub in a documentary feels particularly poignant in a Hollywood that continues to have a conversation about diversity and inclusion. The movie showed a thoughtful and humane perspective, and its failure to receive an Oscar nod leaves a void in the conversation about diverse Hollywood. The situation points that projects that challenge the status quo or bring fresh perspectives often struggle to receive the mainstream recognition they deserve.
