Zoë Saldaña recently became a part of history with her first golden ticket for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Motion Picture for Emilia Pérez, the most-nominated musical at the Golden Globes. As she sat down for an interview with Variety, the actor likened the nod to a prayer answered. But looking back at her disqualification for Avatar because of the Globes’ golden rule of exempting CGI motion-capture performances, Saldaña lamented the popular lack of understanding of the concept.

The Golden Globes nominees have either resorted to endorsement or celebration, but Saldaña did not find herself in the same boat as others. Instead, she tried to elaborate on “performance capture” as a form of art that is neither cloned nor imitated since the one putting all their efforts is the actor. She wanted to dismiss the misunderstanding of CGI-motion capture performances, highlighting the actor or a stunt actor’s role in getting the entirety done.

Saldaña feels actors have an “innate need to connect with other people” because of the hard work they put into their projects. Thus, to finally land that recognition means the art they sacrificed for no longer needs to be closeted. Being an artist means connecting with people through her art, creating an “instant connection” even if it is short-lived. So, while the Golden Globe nomination has her hoping for more, she is content that Emilia Pérez at least took her halfway to that.
