Even before Bad Boys: Ride or Die was in the picture, Will Smith had already landed his first project post the 2022 Oscars slap drama in the form of Brilliance with Paramount. The project would see the Men In Black actor as a producer along with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy making her narrative feature directorial debut. As per Deadline, the project would also reunite Smith with another Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Akiva Goldsman, with whom he has worked on movies like I, Robot, I Am Legend, and Hancock.
Will Smith would be producing Brilliance through his company Westbrook Studios with Jon Mone and Ryan Shimazaki. It will be an adaptation of the Marcus Sakey novel under the same name, and the author would also be co-producing the movie. However, despite his grand comeback to the movie theatres and a surprising return to his musical roots, Will Smith is certainly not melting the hearts of Academy stakeholders.
Will Smith's reported appeals to lift his Oscar ban have been going nowhere, and the reason was recently discussed by an Academy insider.

Will Smith has delivered one of the biggest summer blockbusters of 2024 with Bad Boys: Ride or Die. However, that is not enough to win back his Oscar support, according to Paul N. J. Ottosson. The Academy voter told The Mirror that box office success and fan approval will not guarantee an early Oscar comeback for the King Richard actor. There is only one way the Academy could genuinely ease up on Smith.
That is if Will Smith proves that he is genuinely apologetic for the incident. Not that he has not already, as the Fresh Prince has regretted his decision several times and even shared a video of apology. However, it only increased the backlash toward him. Nonetheless, whether or not he makes a comeback at the Oscars, the hope is that Will Smith will continue drawing fans to the theaters in droves as he always has.
