Will Smith Opens Up About His Biggest “error and misjudgment”, and No It Is Not the Oscar Slapgate
Will Smith has had quite a few regrets in his life. And he does not shy away from admitting them. For most of his career, the rapper-turned-actor managed to keep up his ‘nice guy’ image intact. But then came the infamous 2022 Oscars slap scandal, which cracked open a Pandora’s box of controversies that nobody saw coming. Suddenly, the world was learning all sorts of things about the Smith family- especially the complicated dynamics between Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. But the Oscars drama is not the only thing Will Smith regrets.

Will Smith recently appeared for an upcoming episode of Vice’s Black Comedy in America series, where he reflected on his rocky relationship with Janet Hubert, his former co-star from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Smith admitted, “I made a horrible error and misjudgment of her value and power and beauty to the show.” He further added, “I horribly underestimated what she was for me”.
For context, Janet Hubert played Aunt Viv during the first three seasons of the sitcom. But in 1993, she was replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid, after which an ugly fallout between Hubert and Smith broke. While they reconciled in 2020 and have been on good terms since, the Smith still carries deep regret for how things played out. But he is not the only one reflecting on these fallouts from the ’90s sitcom.
Jaleel White, who also appeared on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, recently shared his own regrets about a professional fallout with Smith.
Jaleel White regrets feuding with Will Smith over miscommunications
In his newly released book, Growing Up Urkel, Jaleel White opened up about a feud between him and Will Smith that started after he guest-starred as Derek on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. White had pitched a show idea to Smith, but due to miscommunications and several outside factors, the project never materialized. Looking back on the fallout, White admitted, “I should have called Will directly.”

White also confessed that his ego got in the way, saying, “Will was becoming such a big star, so fast, that I didn’t have the nerve to call his phone myself.” Despite the feuds and regrets, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air- for which Smith had to pull off some very unconventional moves just to land the role- remains one of the most iconic sitcoms of the ’90s.
