Will Smith Helps Startup Raise $70 Million to Boost Social Media Creators and Artists
If we started listing all the trades that Will Smith has mastered to date, the list would be never-ending. Though his roots lie in the arts of rapping and acting, the 54-year-old is also a successful businessman. Among his many feats is founding Dreamers VC, a venture capital firm alongside Japanese soccer star Keisuke Honda. Since its conception in 2018, their portfolio has gained some impressive startups, including the technological wonder that is Neuralink.
In the rapidly growing sector of online creators, artists are facing a unique problem. Most investment banks are reluctant to offer loans to artists who wish to expand their ventures. For Will Smith, who prides himself in being a Youtube creator himself, this initiative hits close to home. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that in its latest investment move, Dreamer’s VC has directed its funds towards this issue. On July 19, Karat Financial, founded by Wei and Will Kim, secured $70 million in fresh funding with contributions from Dreamers VC and other investors.

Hitting a noteworthy milestone, Karat’s funding concluded at a whopping $100 million plus. The startup aims to use the funds to provide financial management support to influencers and creators. With a unique approach to credit assessment, they are attempting to replace traditional credit scores. In their alternative system, a creator’s social influence on online platforms will determine their access to credit lines. Ready to revolutionize the industry, Karat plans to become a one-stop shop for all financial needs of creators in the industry.
The Fresh Prince actor’s firm boasts itself of giving fair and easily accessible help to new ventures. It doesn’t believe in undercutting competitors in an otherwise cut-throat industry. As a philanthropist, he also heads his family’s non-profit organization that empowers children across Texas, Hawaii, and Africa. But that’s not all! According to a fellow celebrity rapper, Smith’s generosity also extends to those in the same field as him.
