After a long-celebrated run as a legendary actor, Will Smith co-founded Westbrook Studios with Jada Pinkett Smith to bring his flavor of filmmaking to Tinseltown. With the aim of encouraging inclusivity and diverse global content, the studio was established in 2019. So far, the studio has delivered multiple award-winning projects that have received widespread acclaim. And the latest film to come from Westbrook, Copa 71 has achieved the same as it seems.

At the first screening of Copa 71 at the Toronto International Film Festival last night, the movie blew viewers away. And Will Smith is now basking in the joy of being a part of its success story.

Recently, Westbrook Studios collated the reviews of Copa 71 from its TIFF 2023 premiere into an Instagram post. Now, its co-founder, Will Smith shared that same post to his Instagram story earlier today. Besides media agencies, critics also came forward to applaud the project as seen in the post. Everybody thought that the riveting true story that inspired the documentary deserved recognition.

As the Smith couple did for King Richard, they again partnered with Serena Williams and Venus Williams, who served as the executive producers for Copa 71. After all, who would be better than the Williams sisters to tell the tale of women breaking barriers in the male-dominated industry of sports?

Based on a grand women’s soccer event, Copa 71 documented a historic event that was later “erased from the sporting history books.” An earlier flick from Westbrook Studios that followed similar themes had once even won Will Smith an Oscar.

Just as the riveting storyline of Copa 71 tells the tale of gender bias in sports, King Richard once did the same by telling the tennis champions, the Williams sisters’ story. Will Smith who played their father, Richard Williams in it, was awarded an Oscar for the same. Considering the waves of recognition Copa 71 has already received, it may be possible that Westbrook Studios may soon have another award-winner to boast off.

Meanwhile, the Independence Day actor and his wife are also reviving the iconic Fresh Prince of Bel-Air through Westbrook Inc. As the executive producer of the show, Smith is hell-bent on ensuring that the 90s hit series retains its original flavor. Hopefully, it will be just as satisfying a watch as Copa 71 was for festivalgoers.
