Robert Downey Jr. has long been the Iron Man the world has known. However, it has also been half a decade since comic fans bid farewell to their beloved character from the screen with the iconic last dance, Avengers: Endgame. For most, no bigger installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe pinched the heart as strongly as Endgame did, but with the movie, there came an organic acceptance of Iron Man’s final words. However, over the years fans have often wondered if the iconic character could ever make a comeback to MCU’s film slate, even if in the form of flashbacks.

It seems now, that the ponderings have finally seen some light with the makers of Endgame revealing the odds. 

During an early April cover story with Esquire Magazine, Robert Downey Jr. revealed that he would “happily” return to the MCU if there ever opens up an opportunity. He remarked that the role “chose” him and hence if he were given a chance to revisit the same, he would take it in a heartbeat. However, in a recent interview with GamesRadar+, the Russo brothers confessed their uncertainty about its potential, since it is a close chapter.

Anthony Russo remarked that it would be up to MCU to “figure out how to reopen it”. Although during Downey Jr.'s conversation with Esquire Magazine, he added that he would never bet against Kevin Feige’s planning since he is always full of surprises, Feige himself confessed his disinclination to change the narrative to Vanity Fair in December. However, Feige’s admission came long before the actor’s confession, hence, who knows what the future could hold?

Despite the ambiguity of the situation and the Russo brothers’ uncertainty and confusion, Robert Downey Jr. has been an established star whose recognition bears more weight than Iron Man’s armor. And his first-ever Oscar win vouches for that.

After leaving Iron Man’s shoes, Robert Downey Jr. wasted barely any time to soil his name as an Academy winner with his stunning performance in Oppenheimer. Little did fans know back in the day that his road from Endgame could lead to his first-ever Oscar win and not to forget the countless Supporting Actor titles including the SAG Awards and Golden Globes he has bagged along with. 

Before the victories, however, in a July interview with The New York Times from 2023, he expressed doubt over whether his skills would justify a period character like Levis Strauss. Even though the actor may have had doubts about his versatility, Christopher Nolan did not, and guess where it took them? To the Oscars. Hence, regardless of an Iron Man comeback, there is little room for doubt that Robert Downey Jr. has the identity of an artist, and with time, it can mold every big name.
