Will 2023’s Barbenheimer Finally Have a Crowned Winner at Oscars 2024?
With Hollywood gearing up for the 96th Academy Awards, fans all over the world are filled with anticipation over whether 2023’s biggest cinematic debate, Barbenheimer, will finally be settled. Although Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer were released on the same day, both films have gone through rather different paths to achieve success over the last year.
They might have gone head-to-head for a while. However, the nominations for the awards ceremony gave Murphy’s biographical drama the lead. Now, with the BAFTAs wrapped up, the Barbenheimer debate will finally be put to rest on March 11th.

After Barbie and Oppenheimer were released on the same day, both films ended up taking over the box office. While the Greta Gerwig film took the lead by grossing $1.4 billion worldwide, the Christopher Nolan film kept bringing in the wins. From the Golden Globes to the BAFTA Awards, the drama swept various award shows. They even wound up leading the Oscar 2024 nominees list with 13 nods.
While award season seems to have been treating Cillian Murphy’s film well, that has not been the case for Margot Robbie’s film. Although the women all over the world had loved it, the Academy Awards did not. The lead actress and the director of the film did not even make it to the Best Actress or Best Director category. With the Mattel film being pushed aside, there seems to be no doubt that the atomic bomb biography will be crowned the winner.
Barbie and its cast might not be on track to score an Oscar. However, the film still managed to break records with their box office numbers.

Last year, Margot Robbie’s Barbie did not only battle Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer but also took on Taylor Swift and her concert film at the Golden Globes. While most of the world had expected the pop sensation to make history that night, the Mattel film ended up stealing the win for the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award. It went so far as to break records set by beloved franchises like Star Wars.
With Robbie’s film bringing in more money than Murphy’s, fans had expected the award season to go in the same way. However, it looks like Oppenheimer might sweep the Oscars just like it did at the BAFTAs earlier this month.
