In the illustrious world of 90s Hollywood, a plethora of versatile actors emerged, some ruled pan-genre while others became maestros in a particular one. Among the titans were Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robert Englund. The former was a force to reckon with at the box office as he flexed his muscles and single-handedly ruled the action genre. While the latter terrorized the audiences with his portrayal of Freddy Krueger and immortalized himself in Hollywood. To see the icons of horror and action genres on the same screen would have definitely made for a memorable watch.
The idea of uniting Robert Englund and Arnold Schwarzenegger on-screen was first brought to life by a renowned director. Someone that Englund and presumably Schwarzenegger were eager to work with. But fate had other plans.

Seeing the Austrian Oak return to the cinema with Netflix’s FUBAR and Robert Englund with Stranger Things is nothing closer to surface level. It is a testament to the incredible ability of both the stars to shine regardless of the time and size of the screen. While a FUBAR and Stranger Things collaboration would not make much sense, Robert Englund, in an interview with Dread Central, revealed that he was slated to make “the best movie ever” with Arnold Schwarzenegger, except it was “too expensive.”
Much like Schwarzenegger, Englund too finds himself basking in glory post the release of his documentary. This entailed a confession of how he and the Austrian Oak were set to make blockbuster magic in the 70s with ‘Crusade‘. The cherry on top being the fact that it would have been Paul Verhoeven’s directorial.
Englund would play a “balding monk that carries weapons” setting the tone for an action extravaganza in Spain. While that project never saw the light of day due to financial issues, the actors did get a chance to unite.

The 90s legends did not get a chance to work with Paul Verhoeven, but Bob Rafelson wrapped them up in a comedy-packed spectacle, Stay Hungry. The movie won Schwarzenegger his very cherished ‘Best Acting Debut’ Golden Globe.
The catch, however, is that it was not even the Austrian Oak’s debut movie. Nonetheless, this meta tale of Arnold Schwarzenegger playing a character who is training to be Mr. Universe became a success. While it is sad that we did not see them reunite on the big screen again, Stay Hungry proved to be a career milestone for the two 90s titans.
