Why Henry Cavill’s Superman Fight Against General Zod Became Incredibly Controversial
The 2013 film Man Of Steel, starring Henry Cavill, is arguably the most-watched DC project to date. The Zack Snyder film took the world by storm with its impeccable display of Superman. Not only was the film a major success for DC, but it also helped establish Cavill as the face of the franchise. Even though years have passed since the film’s release, the Man of Steel is a topic of contention among the fans.
Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the DCEU version of Superman was terrific. However, some of the character’s actions were questionable and did not align with the typical depiction of Superman. Fitting the bill was the character’s fight against General Zod.

Superman is one of the most potent characters on-screen. The Man of Steel is an incredibly prominent character for DC and is often recognized as a symbol of hope. However, there were times when the only hope for the people let them down. For instance, during Superman’s reckless fight against General Zod in Metropolis, the caped hero chose to forego the lives of several people in order to protect himself. The character’s nonchalance towards destruction is evident as he jumps out of the way rather than stop the tank.
The event results in the obliteration of the parking lot in Metropolis, killing several innocent people in the film. However, the storyboard artist did have a peculiar explanation about the scene. Jay Oliva took to Twitter as he defended the Man of Steel‘s nonchalance. Interestingly, per Oliva, the parking lot did not have a lot of people in it. He revealed that the scene’s setup was clear, there were no bystanders, and it was an empty parking lot being destroyed.
However, the explanation does not make much sense. Metropolis was a busy city and it is highly unlikely that no one died during the explosive battle between General Zod and Superman.
Meanwhile, prior to the movie, Cavill had no confidence that he would play Superman.

His legacy as Superman is so incredible that despite David Corenswet taking over, fans still want the actor back. However, when Cavill first auditioned for the role, he was completely hopeless that he would land the role.
The actor revealed that the first time he put on the Superman suit and looked at himself, his inner thoughts kept telling him that he was not ready. Moreover, Cavill was convinced that the creators would let him go after seeing him in the suit. However, Zack Snyder knew that no one could do a better job than Cavill. He convinced Warner Bros, and shortly after, the British star donned the Kryptonian suit.
