Why Did King Charles Not Sing the National Anthem at the Coronation?

Despite its history of being a cut above the rest, Britain’s national anthem rose to the ranks that it did at a time when the country was going through turbulent times. “God bless our Noble King, God Save great George our King…” sang the caste of Drury Lane Theatre. And throughout the years, it has become a pivotal part of every royal ceremony that takes place. Therefore, it was only a given that it be sung at the coronation of King Charles with all pomp and grandeur. And while all the esteemed guests stood up to sing it, the center of attraction had his lips sealed throughout.

The Coronation ceremony of King Charles, although cut down its guests drastically, had more than 20 million viewers streaming it. And when a ceremony in the 21st century costs around  $100 million dollars, fans make sure to notice every minute detail. This is why King Charles not singing the national at his crowning ceremony made waves.

Written by Henry Carey, the anthem famously goes “God save the King,” with its other parts praying for its happiness or his long reign. And the King in question is King Charles III. Therefore, it would not sound all too pleasing for the King to wax poetic about himself.

King Charles, not singing the national anthem, is not a sign of his disrespect but a display of his claiming the throne and the responsibility that came with it. And King Charles getting emotional while singing the national anthem during Queen Elizabeth’s funeral is a testament to this.

The reign of the former monarch of England lasted over seventy years and some two hundred days. Owing to its long span, not only England but the rest of the world found comfort in Queen Elizabeth as the sovereign of Britain. Therefore, as King Charles takes on the crown, the citizens and he are far from getting along like a house afire. And add to this the fact that he did not sing the song of praise dedicated to his country and you have earned an array of thumbs down and questions about your respect for your homeland.

The tantalizing questions reach an abrupt stop when you pay attention to the lyrics of the anthem. The head of the monarch has mostly stuck to not singing the national anthem during their coronation, as it is a praise for them. While Prince William along with Kate Middleton stood tall while singing his anthem, when he takes the crown in the coming future, he too is likely to follow in his father’s footsteps.
