The dating escapades on Friends often brought in some of the funniest and most unforgettable guest appearances. One such memorable cameo was of Roger’s, the therapist guy. Roger played Phoebe Buffay’s date in Friends and appeared in the first season, for the episode The One With The B**bies. While the character only appeared in just one episode, he managed to rub every other character the wrong way. The face behind the character, however, is of a respected, Academy-award-winning actor.

Here is a breakdown of who brought Roger to life on the popular sitcom and why he was so loathed by all the other characters.

The actor behind the sweet and extremely perceptive guy, who was also an evil truth bomber, was Fisher Stevens. He is an Oscar-winning actor who is also popular for his specialization in making documentaries like Crazy Love and Before the Flood. The actor’s guest appearance easily became a memorable cameo on the show. Roger, initially found the eccentricities of Phoebe’s friends quite entertaining. However, he soon started to step on the nerves of the six Friends with his shrink-y behavior.

Roger shifted to harshly scrutinizing the Friends‘ personalities and psychological complications. From probing into the bitter origins of Chandler’s humor to shedding light on Ross’ marital choices as a form of self-sabotage, a reality that even David Schwimmer’s character confessed to later on, Roger started to peel the layers of the characters’ psyches, much to the group’s annoyance. And apparently, he was not just this annoying as a character on the show.

Fisher Stevens sat for an interview with People TV’s Couch Surfing, where he opened up about his stint in the classic sitcom, Friends. When discussing his role with the host in 2021, he confessed that Friends was his first sitcom experience, and he “did not watch TV at the time much” either. Therefore, he was not very familiar with the format. This went ahead to annoy the actor, which in turn made him irritable towards the cast.

In the interview, Stevens admitted to losing his cool on the sets upon realizing that his scenes had been rewritten before he even got to the set. I was kind of an a**hole, I have to admit“, said the actor while apologizing to the cast and crew of the show. The 60-year-old also admitted that despite not having watched much of Friends, he would jump at the chance if they reached out to him again for the show.
