Meghan Markle continues to give the royal family its most challenging chapter yet. Although her stint in the monarchy lasted less than a decade, she walked out with a phenomenon named after her. Markle’s adieu, although being the first of its kind, is reminiscent of the previously and popularly titled royal mavericks, Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson.

Meghan Markle, Princess Diana, and Ferguson are best remembered for their outspoken nature that often took the form of arrows headed straight toward the royal family’s reputation. But the late Queen said did say, “Recollections may vary.” What does not vary, however, is the questions all three have raised about the “men in gray suits.”

The men in gray suits vs the royal brides

The “men in gray suits” is a term coined by Princess Diana, as she referred to those who tried to discredit her and ultimately accelerate her downfall. Over the years, it has resurfaced many times but not with such surprising fervor until Meghan Markle also referred to them in her 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview. While there is a plethora of colored speculations regarding said men and what they do, Valentine Low, the author of Courtiers: Intrigue, Ambition and the Power Players Behind the House of Windsor, refers to them as the royal staff.

The author says that the royal brides, especially those who did not flare well with the rules, have given the “men in gray suits” a bad reputation. In his book, he does a deep dive into the workings of the royal family through the words of the royal staff. While it may be true that the staff of Windsor has great power over the crown, it is up for debate if they actually are the men in gray suits that these royal women are referring to.

While Princess Diana may have only hinted at them being controlling and watching her every move, their alleged crimes against Meghan Markle rank higher.

Was Meghan Markle pushed into a corner by the men in gray suits?

The Men in Gray Suits, although a shade different from the Men in Black, share quite a lot of common ground with them. Royal biographer, Anna Pasternak, in her book, compared Markle to Wallis Simpson and claimed that the men in gray suits were after her. Perhaps her decision to leave the palace demotivated them because Markle, barring a few odds, has been flourishing ever since.

It is important to note, however, that this grip that the men in gray hold is not restricted to only Meghan Markle or her late mother-in-law. They also fall among the thin line of similarities that Prince Harry and Prince William share. As the future King, Prince William is already scratching a plan to work his way around them.
