No award show ceremony is ever complete without a hilarious host. While the world has seen the likes of Ricky Gervais, Chris Rock, Kevin Hart and more take up the stage with their enormous presence, this year, the Golden Globe Awards chose to go a different route. It was announced that the triple threat, Jo Koy, would be hosting the ceremony this year. Although the actor has been spectacular in stand-up specials, this will be his first proper hosting gig.

With the 81st annual awards show just a day away, let us take a look at which hilarious stars have led all of Hollywood at the star-studded ceremony before Koy takes the stage for the first time.

Over the years, the world has borne witness to many iconic award show moments. While most have been either hilarious or even heartwarming, there have been a few that were downright awkward. Thankfully for Jo Koy, all those moments still live rent-free online. By watching Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon, Ricky Gervais, and even Andy Samberg’s hosting moments, the comedian could learn how they made their viewers love them as much as they did.

Jerrod Carmichael

Just back in December of last year, it was announced that Jo Koy, the triple threat, would be leading the Golden Globe 2024 ceremony. The actor/comedian/author had finally landed his first major hosting gig after being in the industry for decades. While everyone would be rooting for him to do a remarkable job, he has some rather big shoes to fill with fellow comedian, Jerrod Carmicheal, working the crowd between 2022-2023.

While he left his fans laughing the first time around, his second appearance at the ceremony did not go as well. He kicked off the night with a monologue on race and many other issues that he was plagued with. In place of a good laugh, Carmichael chose to shed light on some very important topics.

Carmichael was the award show’s previous host. However, his stints at no point earned roaring laughter from his audiences that would echo for years to come.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

For years, the world has been captivated by the dynamic duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. While their humor was not for everyone, they sure knew how to give the audience exactly what they wanted. They even hosted the Golden Globes back in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Making them one of the few acts that managed to ensure they kept the gig for over 2 years.

The first time they hosted in 2013, they kicked off the night by talking about how they were not going to be making any offensive jokes, unlike their predecessors, Ricky Gervais. While fans might have loved them, the duo decided to boycott hosting the awards show after their third time back. Although it was a sad goodbye, there were quickly other stars who found their way on board.

Jimmy Fallon

As most late-night show lovers know, there is no host quite as charming as Jimmy Fallon. While he may dazzle the world every night on his talk show, he too once ended up hosting the Golden Globe Awards. Back in 2017, before the pandemic, Jimmy Fallon had cracked everyone up at the award ceremony. Although some of his jokes ended up falling a little flat, his collaboration with Justin Timberlake went down in history.

The Tonight Show host and the singer had taken to social media to share how they would be starting their big day by recreating a moment from Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s hit musical, La La Land. While both of them showed off their amazing talents, it was the host’s humor that ended up stealing all the attention.

Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais has been considered one of the most controversial comedians of the time. However, he still has a huge fan following. Like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, he is one of the few comedians to be called back to host the ceremony 5 times, but his hosting gigs were not back-to-back. In 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2020, the comedian took the stage to make his audience laugh, but it did not always work that way.

In fact, the final straw was in 2020. While audiences expect a risky joke whenever Gervais is on stage, he may have just shattered the glass ceiling a bit too violently a couple of times at the ceremony. However, that is just where the magic lies in Ricky Gervais’ comedy.

Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh

2019 was a wild ride. While it was the year before Covid changed everything, it was also when the world got the crossover they never knew they needed: Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Andy Samberg and Grey’s Anatomy’s Sandra Oh. Once they got onto the stage, it was evident that the chemistry between them came naturally.

They left the audience cracking up with their family-friendly roasts and take on what was happening. While all the comedians had proved just how good they were at handling the crowds, the actors proved that they had their own tricks up their sleeves. Given the rich history of laughter at the Golden Globe Awards show, Jo Koy will have no dearth of inspiration.
