Who can ever forget Ross Gellar’s monkey, Marcel from the NBC sitcom, Friends? While the monkey may have been depicted as a male in the show, it was a team of two highly trained monkeys. Only one of them went on to have a successful career after the show ended. From the episode of her attacking David Schwimmer’s co-worker from the museum to her obsession with a certain song about a sleeping lion, the capuchin ended up being a fan favorite.

However, with the series shifting its focus onto Ross’ parenting of his firstborn, Ben, that storyline of a pet monkey soon went out the window. But whatever happened to the furry animal?

What happened to Friends’ Marcel the Monkey?

Initially, Friends had started with two trained capuchins named Katie and Monkey. While their time on the show was cut short due to the female causing issues on set and David Schwimmer’s lack of a bond with the animal, Katie ended up having an illustrious career after the show. Although Monkey met a rather unfortunate fate with cancer, the other chimp has been in many other sitcoms since.

From NBC’s 30 Rock to Nickelodeon’s Sam & Cat, she made many appearances after her time with the group of six. She even worked with Kendall Jenner in a photo shoot for Allure back in 2015. By 2019, the monkey was in her mid to late 20s and still ready for her next close-up. While her time on the classic sitcom may have been cut short, it does not look like that hurt her career.

Although Katie went on to have an amazing career, back in 1995, David Schwimmer had other thoughts on the monkey back when they worked together.

David Schwimmer’s thoughts on Marcel the Monkey in Friends

Back while Friends was still being filmed, David Schwimmer opened up about what it was like working with live animals on set. Although his character was supposed to have a bond with the animal, it did not seem possible for the actor to get that close due to the trainers on set. Eventually, it made him dislike working with the two capuchins, Katie and Monkey.

While the trainer ended up hitting back saying that the actor was only “jealous” about the monkey’s popularity among fans, the feud seemed to end there. So far, only Matt LeBlanc had admitted to actually enjoying spending time with the monkeys, as he thought they were “really cool.”
